‘Baghdad is my home’ – Icelander says he’s ‘a proud citizen’ after moving to the Middle East
“It’s a lot of fun and I really love it, it’s like a vacation for me, and I enjoy it,” said Gulliver, who now lives in Dubai.
“It gives me something to do, so that’s the best part of it.”
Gulliver is the first British citizen to move to Iraq, but he says the trip has been a “dream come true” for him and his family.
He says he has not experienced anything like it before.
“We are not from here, we have never been here before, and so for us to have this opportunity is amazing,” Gullivers family said.
“For us to be able to see the people who we love, the people that we love so much, it gives us hope that we are going to see these countries and the culture that they have.”
Gill, who is studying English and Arabic at Edinburgh University, said the move to the region has been “absolutely wonderful”.
“It’s very different from my home, I love it here, but it’s also very different to where I grew up,” he said.
He added that he has had a “great time” in Iraq, “but at the end of the day I’m still here”.
Gullivers trip to Baghdad was organised by Icelandic travel website Bahamas Travel portal.
Bahamas is a hub for people to visit the Middle Eastern countries of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, where the majority of people are from European countries.
The country is home to a number of Middle Eastern-origin celebrities, including Hilary Swank and Angelina Jolie, who have all visited.
