The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has warned that there is a risk of “serious humanitarian crises” arising from a humanitarian crisis in the U,S., and that there are “grave concerns” about the potential for “mass migratory and refugee flows” in the region.
“The Utama border crossing at the southern end of the U tama desert in northern Tanzania, where thousands of refugees from Somalia and Eritrea are currently waiting for refugee status, was closed on Sunday and is expected to reopen on Monday,” the UNHCR said in a statement.
The UN says it will take measures to “safeguard” the rights of its citizens, including those who may be affected by the suspension of travel to the states, and that the Utamas border will remain closed until further notice.
In the statement, the UNHCR urged the government of Tanzania to “immediately and unconditionally reopen the border crossing, to allow the safe movement of refugees and migrants, and to resume normal operations.”
In an article published on Sunday, the UTamas border was one of the worst in Africa, with thousands of migrants and refugees waiting to enter the U Tama State.
In an attempt to ease the fears of those who feared a possible return to Somalia, the Tanzania government on Sunday lifted the closure of the border and said it will now allow migrants and people who are refugees to cross.
According to the UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner in Somalia, Luba Ben Ali, called on the government in the south of the country to “ensure that the situation is under control and that all the relevant authorities are following the law, including through an appropriate monitoring mechanism.”
The U Tamas border is one of a number of border crossings in southern Tanzania that were closed during the Somali crisis.
